We are seeking volunteer tutors to help adult learners improve their reading, learn English, or get their GED.

Resources & Training are provided.

Weekly Commitment - min

  • Twice Weekly for at least one hour for each session; OR
  • Once Weekly for at least 1.5 hours each session

Tutor Job Details

Responsibilities

To provide encouragement and support to adult learners by:

  • Select material and approaches suitable to the student's skill levels.
  • Meet regularly and consistently, and be well-prepared for each lesson.
  • Review with the student any work he/she has done independently.
  • Work with students and involve them in all significant decisions about instruction. 
  • Keep a record of students' progress to submit monthly to the Program Coordinator (Monthly Tutor Reports). Reports are due on the 10th of each month.
  • Create long-term and short-term goals with the student.
  • Create lesson plans that directly tie to the student's overall educational goals while keeping in line with their short-term goals.
  • Help the student build confidence and a positive attitude. Affirm his/her thinking and progress in each lesson.
  • Help the student to become an independent learner and self-starter.
  • Show respect for the student, listen to what he/she has to say, and involve the student in decisions about the learning process.
  • Report your status to the Program Coordinator regularly, including updates to tutoring days, times, and locations.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years old (under 18 with special exception).
  • Dependable and prompt.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (if under 18 must be in an educationally advanced high school program, i.e. AICE, IB, etc.).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively.
  • Be able to relate well to various people with varying education levels. Be understanding and sensitive to the student's situation, needs, and goals.
  • Able to commit for at least one year.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Act professionally at all times while tutoring.
  • Friendly, flexible, patient, and optimistic.
